Principal's Message:
How quickly time flies! It seemed just like yesterday when summer vacation began, and already it is coming to an end. Now that we’ve had 3 months to refresh our spirits, I hope you’re ready for school, and a new year to meet up with old friends, and make new acquaintances. Our school year will start on Saturday, Sept 6th; 2008. I sincerely represent my faculty in saying, “Welcome!”
There are some changes to the curriculum this year.
In designing the new program, we hold the students foremost in our considerations. We made sure that the education they receive here would be practical in their everyday lives. The teachers will try to encourage a positive atmosphere and make use of new techniques to create a dynamic learning experience. This will help give motivation for students to enjoy and pursue further learning. We will also be incorporating some traditional Chinese cultural proverbs into the curriculum because school isn’t just about learning vocabulary.
This summer we held a faculty meeting on Aug. 23rd, 2008 and after the discussion, the following are some ideas we’d like to implement for this school year:
1. Zhuyin Fuhao & Hanyu Pinyin
We are gradually incorporating hanyu pinyin into the school curriculum. In a society that uses Latin alphabets, pinyin will be easier for students to type, and it will help give them a head start if they decide to pursue Chinese in colleges or universities.
For elementary grade (below 3rd grade) students, the teachers will continue teaching zhuyin to create a foundation for pronunciation. But during this time, pinyin will be introduced.
For middle grade (4th – 7th grade) students, zhuyin and pinyin will both be taught and used equally.
For upper grade students, teacher will focus on having students type Chinese by using pinyin.
2. Verbal Practice
Chinese is not just a written language, and so we’d like our students to not only be able to write in Chinese, but also speak freely and fluently.
To realize this goal, we have encouraged teachers to allow half an hour during class time to focus on conversational skills. Like they say, “Practice makes perfect!”
3. Traditional Chinese Moral Teachings
The time that students spend in school is only a short period of their life, but the morals they learn can be positive lifelong influences.
We will focus on a different theme every month.
4. AP/ Leadership Class
We are reintroducing the AP/ Leadership class this year. The class will focus on developing critical thinking skills, human relations, volunteering, and teamwork building. The instructor will help nurture these skills through activities that will help promote their leadership abilities.
This class will only be available for students in high school.
5. Resizing and Renaming of Classes
We will be combining some of the classes so that the students can have more lively discussions.
We will also be renaming all of our classes to reflect the changes made to class structures.
NOCCS belongs to all its members. It needs our attentive care, effort, support and encouragement. These qualities give our school the motivational power for continued growth. Family and friends, we invite you to join us. Your active involvement in school activities will directly benefit your children, our students, and set a great example of positive participation.
